Arenal Volcano

Description

The Arenal Volcano is located 15km from La Fortuna, San Carlos in the province of Alajuela. It portraits a perfect cone shape rising at 5,300 feet high (1,633 mts). It is especialy relevant to mention that it is the youngest and most active from all volcanoes in Costa Rica. Arenal is part of our seven active volcanoes counting Irazú, Miravalles, Orosí, Rincón de la Vieja, Poás and Turrialba, which started being active rather less then Arenal. The Arenal volcano was dormant with a single crater in its summit until unexpectedly erupting in 1968; destroying a small town called Tabacón. After this eruption, Arenal had three more craters created but nowadays only one still exists. Nearby you will find the Arenal Lake Reservoir, an important watershed satisfying electricity demand of the national system and Guanacaste irrigation projects.

Arenal is a natural wonder surrounded by panoramic views, protected areas with authentic rain forest and lots of wildlife; rural country farming, cattle fields, walking trails, rivers, hot springs, waterfalls, rivers and many other charms for the outdoors lovers. It has many attractions and activities that would take couple of days to enjoy. However, for those with a short vacation schedule, we can take you on a 1-day tour to enjoy the most popular points of interest in the area. In addition to admiring the volcano, we will visit La Fortuna waterfalls, relax in “El Chollon” hot springs, contemplate the Arenal Lake and go for some souvenir shopping.

This is a long full day tour and you may need to be well rested the night before since it is about 3 to 3.5 hour drive each way. We depart from Jaco, however, we can arrange transportation to different locations and provide you with a quote. The tour is private, therefore the timetable can be slightly adapted to your desire. Contary to collective tours, waiting for programmed stops or following a tight schedule, with us you can feel free to ask your guide to stop along the way if necessary. You have the flexibility to skip or change activities, making this long tour much more relaxing.
